DESCRIPTION

eBay was founded in 1995 by the Iranian-American entrepreneur Pierre Morad Omidyar to foster an interactive model of person-to-person auction. At that time, it proposed a socio-economic system that aimed to bypass the “inefficiencies” of trading in the “real world.”

FACTS (some)

#1: Amazon and Craiglist were launched the same year.

#2: In 2000, eBay had 12 million registered users and a cyberinventory of more than 4.5 million items on sale on any given day. 20 years later is has 1.7 billion listings and 185 million active buyers.

#3: In June 2000, eBay started to run the University Learning Center which was followed, amongst other programmes, by eBay Radio to teach users how to become master sellers.

#4: In 2021, eBay says 72% of its consumer-to-consumer sellers turned to the marketplace as an extra income stream.
