DESCRIPTION

Instagram is an ad-supported photo-sharing application that enables its users to take photos, apply filters, and share them on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Tumblr, Flickr, and Posterous. The app allows its users to capture and customize their photos and videos with several custom-built filter effects. Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2010 in San Francisco, California. It was acquired by Facebook in April 2012.

FACTS (some)

1# Originally launched for iOS in October 2010, Instagram rapidly gained popularity, with one million registered users in two months, 10 million in a year, and 1 billion as of June 2018. The Android version was released in April 2012, followed by a feature-limited desktop interface in November 2012

2# During Facebook F8 (2019), it was announced that Instagram would pilot the removal of publicly-displayed “like” counts for content posted by other users. The head of Instagram stated that this was intended to have users “worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about.”

3# In March 2020, Instagram launched a new feature called “Co-Watching”. The new feature allows users to share posts with each other over video calls.
